ONVIF recently held its latest developer meeting at Canon’s headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Engineers gathered from all over the world and represented a total of 26 companies. Their mission was to test and confirm the interoperability of each of their CCTV and IP systems with the ONVIF specifications agreed at earlier confrences. As we know the aim of ONVIF’s is to ensure that end-users can select from ONVIF compatable suppliers with varients of different products and integrate them together seamlessly onto their networks.

Over 300 hours of testing during the two and half days saw 19 IP cameras and 13 video management systems put through their paces. The results were exceedingly encouraging and is further proof that ONVIF compliancy is the way forward for manufacturers in order to ensure their place amongst the elite. It is another step towards the ONVIF specification being the CCTV industry chosen method of standardization.

Below we list those companies who have adopted the ONVIF standard for ease of use when selecting products to integrate together when designing an IP CCTV system.

What does the standard do?

Well essentially it looks at the network interface , specifically the network layer and looks to ensure all products conform in the following areas:

Real time viewing

Device discovery

Device management

Media config

Event handling

PTZ control

Security

Video analytics

IP configuration

Future proof.

The standard allows flexibility and does not prevent innovation and of course should a manufacturer who uses ONVIF compliant equipment go out of business then there are plenty of others there to pick up the pieces and most importantly the end user is not left with a system no one else can integrate IP CCTV equipment into.

When.

The first product that conformed to ONVIF was released in August 2009 and by the time IFSEC 2010 arrives there will be over 70 products from 10 manufactures to check out.

It only really gives streaming compatibility – offering 3 stages of ‘true’ compatibility – basically, 3 stages for manufacturers to allow or not allow their features and settings to be accessed……..

VideoSphere MegaPX. The new Nanodome from March Networks

VideoSphere MegaPX Nanodome is the new Megapixel IP camera from March Networks. Compact neat and low profile, this IP camera offers high resolution pictures of HD quality. Mpeg compression streams of UP to 30 frames per second and a CMOS chip enables the Videosphere Nanodome to operate in low light scenarios and still give excellent colour and definition. Produced to integrate easily into March Networks video management software the H.264 compression technology within the camera is up to 20 times more efficient than many other J-PEG based IP cameras out in the marketplace.

MegaPX looks a little different from its rivals but as with any March Networks product its quality goes without question. POE  is always a feature we look for here at Integrated CCTV and the Videosphere MegaPX is equipped with this facility a must these days with any Megapixel IP camera. The Nanodome will integrate beautifully with March’s range of HD NVRs and of course the MegaPX is fully ONVIF compliant.

  • The new LILIN NVR range  means they have expanded their range of network video recording solutions once again. The CMX CCTV software and the GVD range of HD NVR’s are capable of recording up to 32 megapixel IP camera streams and displaying these simultaneously. Search options include a time line that allows the operator to easily find video that the end user may wish to export or burn onto a DVD. Points or regions of interest within the megapixel image can be created and this allows flexible recording and reduces storage of unnecessary data. With NVRs capable of up 14 TB of internal storage the GVD HD network video recorders offer some excellent features.

Avigilon talk to Integrated CCTV about their company and the future.

We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to ask Rick Ramsay the product manager with Avigilon some in- depth questions about their megapixel cameras, the company and the future.

1. Rick, what is your role within Avigilon and how long have you been with them?

I am a product manager, responsible for both Avigilon‘s hardware and software products. I joined Avigilon in 2007.

3. The 16 megapixel hd professional camera is quite a talking point. For what applications have you seen it used and how would you measure its success so far?

The Avigilon 16 MP HD camera delivers the highest resolution possible and exceptional detail for monitoring very large areas — the equivalent resolution of more than 50 VGA cameras. Leveraging JPEG2000 compression and High Definition Stream Management (HDSM,) the Avigilon 16 MP HD camera can capture extremely high quality image detail, but requires little bandwidth and storage. The Avigilon 16 MP HD camera is being used in stadiums and public venues, parking lots, transportation systems, and cargo terminals. 4. Having seen your offerings at IFSEC this year, build quality is obviously very important to you. Do you believe this helps you sell your product over cheaper mpix cameras on the market?

5. Arecont look like your nearest competitors – how does the recent price reduction news from them impact or influence your roadmap?

Arecont is one of our partners. In fact, their cameras can be used within the Avigilon Control Center NVMS, so we’re certainly pleased to see moves in the industry that are advancing the adoption of HD and megapixel cameras. Avigilon continues to be the performance and value leader and recently introduced its HD H.264 line of cameras that deliver industry leading H.264 image quality and fully motorized lenses for remote zoom and focus to improve ease of installation at pricing designed to give the broad market access to HD quality surveillance video.

6. What is the Avigilon roadmap?

7. Some in the industry have shed a little doubt about how successful megapixel cameras will be. What is your best answer to critics of high megapixel bandwidth ?

8. Will a megapixel camera replace a dome PTZ camera?

Depending on the scope of coverage and desired level of detail required, a megapixel HD camera can replace a dome PTZ. We have developed a unique set of online system design tools including a camera resolution and lens estimator to help our customers choose the correct camera resolution for each scene to get the detail level expected.

9. When will the industry completely embrace IP? is it cost related?

Cost is certainly a factor, but the ability for an IP system to truly outperform an analog system has also been an important factor in the industry’s move toward full HD performance. The introduction of HD cameras and purpose built HD NVMS platforms has provided the benefits and needed incentive to accelerate the transition.

10. DVRs….are they dead? VMS and servers are the future right?

Analog encoders are designed to integrate legacy analog cameras into a High Definition IP surveillance system, facilitating the transition from analog to full HD over time. 11. Security installers or IT specialists – who do avigilon favour? And where do you see the industry going in the next 5 years?

We believe that both groups are expanding their knowledge and expertise in security and IP technology to take advantage of new opportunities. Over the next five years , we’ll see more security installers expanding into areas conventionally performed by IT specialists and at the same time, IT specialists will begin to offer more integrated security applications.
