IP camera systems.Time to upgrade from analogue

IP camera systems  have long been the preferred upgrade path for the CCTV industry as whole. This is however a little behind schedule as far as we see it and mainly due to the reluctance of end users to waste the investment they have already ploughed into their analogue CCTV solutions. This is where the use of Hybrid CCTV solutions can gently push the industry into the area where they really want to go. IP camera systems have been around since around 1996.

Bandwidth and network capability have always been the factor that has slowed the move to IPCCTV however recent advancements in broadband speeds and network performance means that all possibilities are now very much in the frame. Security equipment manufacturers are however pushing harder for their kit to be totally all IP based .This is also backed by IMS research figures that predict a spending of 2.6 billion US dollars on ip video systems by the end of last year. Other limitations on the growth of IP camera solutions has been the global recession and an apathy towards IP CCTV training from entrenched CCTV installers. This will of course change as the price of IP video systems fall and the benefits become ever clearer. In the meantime however as we mentioned earlier Hybrid solutions will help ease us all into the IP surveillance way of thinking.

Why though has the transition to IP camera solutions and Video management systems been so slow? Well cheap imports have meant that many end users have decided to make do for the time being. With money tight in the UK spending on security has gone into reverse something that none of the IP camera manufacturers could have predicted when they planned their upgrade paths some 5 years ago. All is not lost though.The pure quality and flexibility that can be produced by HD cameras and now megapixel IP cameras mean that at some stage the tipping point will be reached.  IP camera systems will become cheaper and the natural progression to IP camera systems will start to snowball.

The interesting and also innovative feature on all the 180 and 360 cameras is the ability to transmit all the streams down the one single ethernet cable – smart!

Arecont Vision are a great company with great products and are also very open to 3rd party integration – preferring to simply developing clever kit than trying to embody an entire system – although, they do offer great viewing and recording solutions too !

Avigilon talk to Integrated CCTV about their company and the future.

We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to ask Rick Ramsay the product manager with Avigilon some in- depth questions about their megapixel cameras, the company and the future.

1. Rick, what is your role within Avigilon and how long have you been with them?

I am a product manager, responsible for both Avigilon‘s hardware and software products. I joined Avigilon in 2007.

3. The 16 megapixel hd professional camera is quite a talking point. For what applications have you seen it used and how would you measure its success so far?

The Avigilon 16 MP HD camera delivers the highest resolution possible and exceptional detail for monitoring very large areas — the equivalent resolution of more than 50 VGA cameras. Leveraging JPEG2000 compression and High Definition Stream Management (HDSM,) the Avigilon 16 MP HD camera can capture extremely high quality image detail, but requires little bandwidth and storage. 5. Arecont look like your nearest competitors – how does the recent price reduction news from them impact or influence your roadmap?

7. Some in the industry have shed a little doubt about how successful megapixel cameras will be. What is your best answer to critics of high megapixel bandwidth ?

8. Will a megapixel camera replace a dome PTZ camera?

Depending on the scope of coverage and desired level of detail required, a megapixel HD camera can replace a dome PTZ. We have developed a unique set of online system design tools including a camera resolution and lens estimator to help our customers choose the correct camera resolution for each scene to get the detail level expected.

9. When will the industry completely embrace IP? is it cost related?

Cost is certainly a factor, but the ability for an IP system to truly outperform an analog system has also been an important factor in the industry’s move toward full HD performance. The introduction of HD cameras and purpose built HD NVMS platforms has provided the benefits and needed incentive to accelerate the transition.

10. DVRs….are they dead? VMS and servers are the future right?

Analog encoders are designed to integrate legacy analog cameras into a High Definition IP surveillance system, facilitating the transition from analog to full HD over time. 11. Security installers or IT specialists – who do avigilon favour? And where do you see the industry going in the next 5 years?

Over the next five years , we’ll see more security installers expanding into areas conventionally performed by IT specialists and at the same time, IT specialists will begin to offer more integrated security applications.

Megapixel IP cameras – the death of PTZ?

Recently I took a look at the Arecont AV8185 180 degree Panoramic 8  PIXC camera…..wow, what a completely astonishing beast it is ! It got me thinking….a single camera that can span through 180 degrees both pre and post recording with amazing detail…… some of their AVI samples show retail environments and warehouses where, on full wide angle, objects at distance are merely specks on the picture….but using zooming techniques, detail can be achieved at huge distance without compromising quality……. So, could one single 180 degree camera replace a PTZ camera?? Well, in essence, yes it can….. the advantage to a 180 or 360 degree camera is the ability to see EVERYTHING and zoom later, as opposed to the PTZ dome or similar only seeing what it is looking at – move it to another area and it is no longer looking the other way……and whilst the optical zoom produces great images on PTZ cameras, newer megapixel technologies are producing similar results post zoom through electronic magnification…. But, and there is a but…….megapixel IP cameras cannot ‘follow’ someone…..so, no matter where a person is within a scene, there is no ‘dynamic’ zooming or detail enhancement….it is simply a camera that is looking at everything and if real detail is required, then the operator just has to hope it will show up on post zoom… So what is the answer?? Well, maybe megapixel should complement PTZ cameras? co-exist? Work together??? Scenario…… 1 x Megapixel 180degree Panoramic camera looking at EVERYTHING 1 x PTZ camera, centrally located 1 x Analytic box/widget/software that takes the feed from the EVERYTHING seeing megapixel camera, feeds it to the PTZ camera to DYNAMICALLY move, zoom and track the object….. Utopia ! Of course, real utopia would be for the PTZ to ALSO be using megapixel or HD cameras…..and we hear rumours of such products coming up soon from the likes of 360 Vision, March Networks and similar… but how much are they?….. what is the price?………if the price is right ….. the best of both worlds? Maybe !!
